UPB uses digital powerline carrier technology to transmit signals over the powerlines. This means that UPB can be installed in a new home, an old home, or even 3-phase electrical system like you would find in industrial buildings.
Since UPB is digital it is not as susceptible to line noise as X-10 (which is an analog signal.) That makes UPB about 100 times more reliable than X-10 and other analog PLC technologies.
